Outline of Training Topics for new YSA Bishops

The following is one possible outline of topics which should be covered when training a new YSA bishop.

  1. OVERVIEW
    1. Review a bishop's many roles: Judge in Israel, Presiding High Priest, Welfare, Finances and Priests' Quorum
    2. Bishop as teacher: teach doctrine and principles, build faith, strengthen testimony, access blessings of the Atonement (see D&C 43:8-10)
    3. Use of priesthood keys
    4. Study and teach from CHI (see D&C 107:99)
    5. Utilize the stake presidency and high council as resources
  2. MINISTER: "SHEPHERDS OF THE FLOCK" (SEE 3 NEPHI 19:7-13)
    1. One-on-one ministry: learn names, visit homes, interviews
    2. Assist members to resolve concerns using the scriptures, teachings of the Brethren and prayer
    3. Meet regularly with EQP & RSP
    4. Appropriate contact with sisters
    5. Balance: personal, family and employment responsibilities
    6. Delegate (consider Asst. Executive Secretary if needed)
    7. Home and visiting teaching: review, monthly reports
  3. ADMINISTER
    1. Mission candidates: online application, thorough/searching interview and contact other Bishops
    2. Pornography: "Helping Those Who Struggle with Pornography"; "LDS Family Addiction Recovery Program "; "Covenant Eyes "; professional counselors
    3. How are BYU wards different from CHI description?
    4. Organize quickly (otherwise always catching up)
    5. Monday night activities on campus
    6. Membership guidelines: eligible to attend, engaged members
    7. Recommending temple ordinance and veil workers
  4. SUNDAYS
    1. Sacrament Meeting
      1. Topics: focus on doctrines and principles from the Savior's ministry and plan of salvation
      2. Prelude music
      3. Preparation: topics, prepare the speakers (see draft), prayers, sacrament
      4. Bishopric seated 5 minutes before the meeting begins
      5. Announcements (business only)
      6. Relatively brief talks (5-7 minutes) in general
      7. Pure testimony, teach regarding (refer to Elder Ballard's conference address)
      8. Bishop should speak to his ward regularly (Bishop as teacher)
      9. Sustain/Release format (see CHI, pgs. 47-48)
    2. Other meetings/events
      1. Chart of ward meetings/ward callings (see CHI, pgs. 72-73, 52-56)
      2. Attendance at meetings: Sunday School, priesthood and relief society
      3. Temple recommend interviews: represent Savior; forms; prior Bishops; garment statement
      4. Callings: CHI, establishing stewardships ("extend call" v. "asking")
      5. Temple and marriage preparation: classes, interviews, Preparing to Enter The Holy Temple
