How YSA Service Councils Increase Activity Levels and Retention

President Hinckley taught that all new members need a friend, a responsibility, and to be taught the good word of God. This is particularly important for young single adults. Unfortunately, there are many Young Single Adult Wards where less than one-half of the members have any responsibility or calling at all — let alone a “meaningful” calling. Young single adults need to be involved in building the kingdom. They can do so by:

  • Knowing that they are needed in the ward
  • Receiving opportunities to serve others
  • Regularly interacting with other ward members
  • Regularly interacting with experienced church leaders

Service opportunities for every member

When young people “sit out” for a period of time they often struggle with spirituality, Sunday activity, friendship, and their testimony. Consequently they are more susceptible to making poor decisions. However, they also miss leadership preparation that is essential during this stage of their lives.

Therefore, ward leaders need to ensure that each member is involved in a meaningful calling that presents genuine opportunities for service and growth soon upon their arrival in the ward. This means days, not weeks.

By implementing YSA Service Councils ward leaders create an environment that makes it possible for literally every member of the ward to have a meaningful calling. Done properly, these lead to the sought-after service opportunities. Councils are successful when:

  • Members are taught the effective use of councils
  • Members are regularly and deeply involved in small group councils that support the three-fold mission of the church
  • Members use their creativity in performing compassionate service to others
  • Councils include a good mix of sisters and brothers to facilitate interaction and friendship
  • Both brothers and sisters have opportunities to serve as council leaders

Because YSA Service Councils place brothers and sisters together in small group settings, they jointly develop and carry out plans to serve in various ways, which fosters friendship and the development of leadership skills. Relief Societies and Elders Quorums of approximately 30 members give more members an opportunity for individual ministering, while reducing burdens on presidencies. A wonderful spirit is developed through these interactions, and great growth occurs among members as they council together, become actively engaged in a good cause, and ultimately lose themselves.

The increased activity resulting from this organization generates an environment of friendship, belonging, and righteous living. The Bishop is able to concentrate on ministering. More members work through the repentance process, putting the past behind them and moving forward with clean and healthy lives. By involving members in an organization where everyone is needed and everyone is growing spiritually, you create a ward that everyone wants to attend.
